The sales brochure, glossy and expensive, landed on his doormat with a soft thud. He didn't even bother to open it. He could picture the photographs: sleek kitchens, spa-like bathrooms, panoramic views. He already knew the subtext: you are not worthy.

He thought about the handwritten note he'd gotten from the previous tenant. They’d traded tips and tricks for making the place habitable. He'd never know the new neighbors. They'd be all about keeping to themselves. He crumpled the brochure and tossed it into the recycling bin, feeling a strange satisfaction.
