The late afternoon sun warmed Amelia's face as she watched her niece, Lily, scribble furiously with a crayon on a large sheet of paper. Lily giggled, a bright, bubbly sound that always seemed to chase away any lingering shadows from Amelia's day. The air in the kitchen, usually bustling with the sounds of dinner preparations, was hushed, save for the scratching of the crayon.

Amelia leaned against the counter, arms crossed, a small smile playing on her lips. She felt a deep, abiding satisfaction. The aroma of simmering tomato sauce mingled with the sweet scent of Lily’s bubblegum-flavored lip gloss. She'd always loved this time of day.

Lily held up the drawing, her eyes shining with pride. It depicted a creature with mismatched wings and a friendly, toothy grin. "This is Sparklewing!" she chirped. Amelia, seeing something familiar in the creature’s design, felt a warmth bloom in her chest. She reached for the drawing, a gentle urge to touch it, to study it. A long-forgotten fondness surfaced from deep within.
