The rhythmic clinking of spoons against ceramic filled the small kitchen as Maya expertly whipped cream for the strawberry shortcake. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. This was her perfect Saturday, baking, and getting ready for the party.

A knock on the door, and in walked Chloe, late, and wearing a cheap, flimsy dress that was not the kind of thing she usually wore. Chloe, known for her impeccable style, usually worked in a well-regarded architecture firm.

"Sorry I'm late!" Chloe said, her voice strained. She slumped onto a chair, her shoulders slumped. Maya, still smiling, thought nothing of it. "You wouldn't believe what happened at the office today," Chloe began.

"Oh?" Maya said, turning from the stove.

"Well..." Chloe stumbled, hesitating before blurting out, "I, uh, don't work there anymore." Her voice was quiet.

Maya's happy bubble seemed to pop. Her hands, previously so sure, felt suddenly clumsy. The sweet anticipation of the party soured a little. The light in the kitchen seemed to dim a bit.
