The afternoon sun streamed into Maria’s office, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. She loved the light, loved the warmth on her skin. She had finished her presentation early, and was able to leave for the day. Her mind felt clear, her schedule relaxed. She enjoyed the quiet solitude of her work.

As she was packing her things, she overheard a conversation between two junior colleagues discussing their salaries. A jolt, like electricity, ran through her. Both were earning a lot more than she was.

She drove home in silence, the vibrant colors of the sunset lost on her. The familiar route now seemed a long, arduous journey. Her cheerful mood was gone.
