"Well, hello there," Amelia said aloud, her voice echoing in the vast space. She’d always loved the attic. Her husband was out, and her kids were with friends. The house was her own. She was looking for a forgotten box of Christmas decorations.

She found a collection of old letters, tied together with a faded ribbon. She pulled them out, one by one. She read each one slowly. She read about love, loss, and the everyday lives of the previous occupants of her house. She traced the loops of the penmanship.

She leaned against a trunk, lost in contemplation. The silence and the history had found her. It felt like home now. The quiet was a relief.
