David tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, a small smile playing on his lips. The radio played his favorite song, and the late afternoon sun painted the sky in vibrant hues as he drove towards Sarah's apartment. He felt a lightness in his chest, an almost giddy sense of well-being. Their date last night had been perfect.

He’d almost forgotten his umbrella and cursed under his breath. He turned to go back to the car when he saw her. Another man, shorter than him, but with the same goofy grin he seemed to wear every time he saw Sarah. He was holding a small box, a box just like the one he had given her last week for her birthday.

She saw him, and her smile faltered. The man looked up. His face changed from happiness to confusion. Sarah seemed to want to shrink into the ground as she stammered, “Um…David, this is…Michael.”
