Sam whistled as he walked down the street, feeling buoyed by the prospect of seeing Jessica later. He clutched a small, wrapped gift in his hand, a vintage record he knew she'd been searching for. Their relationship was easy, a comfortable fit. He felt a deep sense of belonging with her.

He saw her sitting outside a café, laughing with a man. The man had the same bracelet on that he had given Jessica for her birthday. Sam froze, the gift suddenly feeling heavy in his hands.
