The worn leather of the armchair molded perfectly to Silas’s form. Outside, a gentle rain tapped against the windowpanes. He was in the library, a haven of books and quietude. His sister, Amelia, was upstairs, probably sorting through her grandmother’s jewelry. He closed his eyes, inhaling the scent of old paper and wood. He felt…at ease. The weight of the world seemed to have lessened, the anxieties that constantly gnawed at him, momentarily abated. He had all the time in the world.
