The late afternoon sun painted the kitchen in warm hues as Agnes hummed, expertly rolling out the pastry dough. The rhythmic thwack of the rolling pin was a familiar comfort, a balm to her soul. She anticipated the upcoming village bake-off with cheerful enthusiasm. She thought about her gooseberry tart, the secret ingredient, a pinch of nutmeg, a whisper of vanilla, and the perfect balance of sweet and tart.

A few days later, whilst strolling through the marketplace, she stopped at a stall advertising “Madame Evangeline’s Gooseberry Delight.” The tart looked exactly like hers, a perfect circle of golden crust, glistening fruit. A wave of bewilderment washed over her.

She approached the stall, a polite smile on her face. "That's a beautiful tart," she said, her voice even. The woman behind the counter beamed. “It’s become very popular! Everyone adores Madame Evangeline’s recipe.” Agnes swallowed, a strange tightness in her chest. She bought a slice, took a bite, and knew instantly it was hers. The nutmeg was unmistakable. Despite the theft, a small, subtle smile flickered across her lips. It was good to know her recipe was loved.
