The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the room, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Sophia inhaled deeply, enjoying the scent of her lavender candle. She sat at her desk, feeling peaceful and at ease. She felt as though she could do anything. Reaching for her journal was an act of comfort and familiarity.

The journal sat on the bed, its spine cracked, the corner of a page turned down. Sophia froze. The page revealed a detailed account of a fight she’d had with her mother, a private conversation. Her roommate, Chloe, was suddenly engrossed in a particularly intriguing episode of her favourite show.
