The rhythmic thud of volleyballs filled the gym. Coach Davis stood at the net, arms crossed, observing. The team was sharp today, their passes crisp, their spikes powerful. A feeling of… ease settled over him. He’d made the difficult decisions on cuts a few days prior. He observed how the team dynamics shifted when specific players were not on the court. There was a sense of order to the team that made him enjoy it.

He called over Sarah, a player who hadn’t quite made the cut, but showed promise. Her face fell when he called her over.

“Sarah, come here,” he said, trying to be as gentle as possible.
