Liam was whistling a jaunty tune as he walked across campus, the early autumn air crisp against his face. He felt at ease, having just finished a productive morning at the library, and was now heading to his favorite cafe to work on his literature review. He felt a light feeling. He anticipated the rich aroma of coffee and the familiar clatter of mugs, and his work felt manageable.

A colleague stopped him near the Humanities building. "Did you see Davies' email?" The colleague's face was tight with worry. Liam blinked, and then gave a confused look. He had no clue what the colleague was referring to. It was only when he saw the words "Leaving the University" in the subject line that he felt the lightness in his chest start to compress.
