Michael stretched, the satisfying creak of his joints echoing in the quiet kitchen. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He glanced at the calendar; it was Friday. A weekend stretching before him, filled with the simple pleasures of life. The scent of brewing coffee filled his nostrils.

He’d finally tackled the overflowing junk drawer earlier. In sorting through old mail, he found a bank statement he didn't recognize. The account holder was his wife, Sarah. He’d known they were both on the same track with their goals, so he wasn’t worried, or jealous.

He followed the instructions on the statement and found the bank website. Once he logged in, he realized this was a serious nest egg that she’d kept secret. He grinned. He knew her, and knew why she might have done this. She loved surprises. Maybe he could surprise her back.
