The coach's request felt like a betrayal. "You're going to be the libero, Samantha." Samantha, a spiker, felt a jolt of shock. After all her training, she was being asked to play defense, to constantly be in the back row. She didn’t know what to do.

She stared at the net, the barrier between her and the other team. The gymnasium seemed to spin. The familiar smell of sweat and rubber seemed to suffocate her. The sun, streaming through the windows, felt less warm. She stood rooted to the spot. She wouldn't do it. She'd get herself injured on the court before switching positions. She was a hitter. And she would never be anything else.
