"Oh, *him*," Sophia muttered under her breath, spotting Alex in the garden. She’d spent weeks avoiding this moment. The last thing she wanted was to see him again. The last thing she wanted was to care. Now he was here, looking handsome in his suit.

She found a secluded corner, nursing a glass of wine. He was talking to people, smiling, moving with his usual charm. She felt a strange pressure in her chest, a feeling like she was being watched.

Ignoring the fluttering sensation, she called the waiter over and ordered another drink. She felt every person's gaze on her, and knew that Alex was as well. She raised her glass again, towards the dance floor. She wanted him to see the drink as the sign of her confidence, not of her despair. She smiled and let the music wash over her.
