A wave of heat flushed over Mateo. The nurse, looking pale, mumbled apologies. "It seems we gave you the wrong results. These... these aren't yours." The papers in Mateo's hands detailed a lifestyle far removed from his own quiet existence – a history of heavy drinking, a chain-smoking habit.

He laughed, a sharp, humorless sound. He couldn't help himself. He balled up the offending documents, then hurled them into the waste bin. "Well, that's just fantastic, isn't it?" He turned on his heel. He didn't wait for further explanations.

He stormed out, the fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway reflecting off the sheen of sweat on his brow. The air outside smelled fresh and clean. He’d spend the day in the park, enjoying himself. He had no intention of going back.
