The lump in Maria's throat made it difficult to swallow. The pay stub lay innocently on the desk. She reread it a fourth time, then a fifth. Liam, a recent graduate with zero experience in the field, was earning a higher hourly rate. Her pulse thrummed in her ears, a furious, staccato beat.

She pulled her chair closer to the computer. She typed up a resignation letter. This isn't how it ends. She wasn't some kind of pushover. This company was going to regret this.
