The scent of roasting pork filled the small apartment, a smell that always made Maya's stomach twist with fondness. But tonight, something felt different. Her boyfriend, David, stood at the stove, humming. Maya knew that melody - it was a childhood folk song, sung in Spanish. She leaned against the doorframe, a frown etching itself onto her face.

"What's this, then?" she asked, her tone flat. David turned, startled. "Oh, hey, mi amor! I thought I'd surprise you." He gestured towards the platter of food with a flourish. Maya’s lips curved downward. She approached the table slowly, her gaze fixed on the table, her hands clenched at her sides. "You've been... learning Spanish, haven't you?" She didn't wait for him to respond. She sat down, picked up a fork, and began to eat, deliberately ignoring his attempts to engage her.
