The familiar scent of her mother's lavender-scented laundry detergent made her stomach churn. Ava stood in front of the open washing machine, watching the clothes tumble. They were clean, pristine, like the life she’d been living. But now, it was all a lie. The adoption results had exposed a chasm of unknowns.
