The antique writing desk, his father's, was displayed prominently in the living room. His stepmother, clutching a folder of financial documents, was discussing the potential selling price with a brisk determination. The air was thick with the odor of stale cigarette smoke and unspoken tensions.

He felt a familiar tightening in his chest. The desk was a symbol of his father's presence, a tangible connection to the man he had loved. He refused to let it go.
