Sophie stared at the dress in the shop window. It was the color of cotton candy and probably cost more than her rent. She had to buy a dress, a fancy dress. Chloe’s party demanded it. She felt a wave of nausea. She'd rather swallow glass.

Instead, she headed for the used record store. She'd been promising her friends for weeks. They were going to start a band. Today, they would have the first band rehearsal.

She could almost feel the freedom, the grit of it. No glittery dresses, no polite conversations. Just music, noise, a chance to be authentic. Her hands were already itching for the guitar.
