“Great news!” the email began, a saccharine greeting that made Jane’s stomach churn. Sold. She felt a wave of nausea. The walls of her small cubicle seemed to close in around her. The company’s soul would be crushed.

She pushed her chair back, the plastic wheels squealing on the worn carpet. She refused to stay and watch. She grabbed her bag and walked out of the office. She'd send an email later, but for now she needed to be outside, to breathe.

She'd start her own company. She would take everything she learned here and build something even better, something they could never touch.
