The congratulatory messages, the pats on the back, they all felt like slaps in the face. John, the man who had always taken the easy route, had gotten the promotion. It was a joke. A cruel one.

He wouldn’t join the office celebration. He turned away from the crowded conference room. He would eat his lunch alone, at his desk, and work. He opened a new spreadsheet, a new project.

He would build a portfolio that would make them reconsider their decision. He’d show them, with undeniable facts and figures, the magnitude of their error. He would become indispensable.
