"Eviction?" Sarah’s voice was dangerously low, a growl she hadn't realized she possessed. She held the notice as if it were a venomous snake, studying the precise calligraphy of the landlord's signature. Then she tore it in half, then again, and again, until it was confetti.

Her apartment, a haven of mismatched furniture and overflowing bookshelves, suddenly felt like a fortress. She locked the deadbolt, a habit she’d never bothered with before. Every creak of the aging building now sounded like a challenge, every shadow a potential threat. Her hands were shaking with the idea of being told what to do.

She went to the corner store, buying the most expensive bottle of wine. Tonight, she would enjoy it. Tomorrow, she'd face whatever came.
