He slammed the old wooden file cabinet shut, the metal latch clanging in the silence of the spare room. Inside, amidst yellowed tax returns and holiday cards, he’d unearthed his father’s hidden secret: a letter of resignation from the university, citing “irreconcilable differences” with the administration. Liam had always seen his father as a gentle, compromising soul, the kind to go along to get along. This document, however, spoke of a different man. The words were a fiery challenge, a refusal to bend. Liam felt a strange surge of exhilaration as he clutched the paper, a feeling he couldn't quite name, but one that stirred something long dormant within him. He ripped the letter to shreds.
