He held the letter, the paper brittle and thin. This was it. His mother’s resignation. From the choir. He'd never understood her, this woman, who always told him to accept things, to be happy. He had found it inside a box with photos, and things from her high school days. He read it again. The letter was a stinging indictment of the director’s tyrannical control. He felt a prickle of heat rise in his cheeks, then a strange sense of… ownership. This was her, the real her. He folded the letter carefully, then tucked it inside the pages of his favorite book. He grinned to himself.
