He cracked his knuckles, the sound sharp in the otherwise quiet room. The letter, penned in a surprisingly elegant script, felt heavy in his hands. It was from his former mentor, the man who had stolen his research, and destroyed his career. A coldness settled over him. He walked to the fireplace, grabbed the poker, and stared into the empty hearth. He knew he should feel something, forgiveness perhaps, but all he felt was a vast, hollow emptiness. He slammed the poker against the brick of the fireplace and then dropped the letter into the grate.
