The email sat in Maya’s inbox, mocking her. A picture of a girl who, based on the pixelated image, could be her twin. The words “Your father requested I reach out…” danced tauntingly across the screen. Maya clicked delete, her finger pressing down with unnecessary force.

She grabbed her leather jacket and stormed out of her apartment. The air outside was cold, but she didn’t care. She stalked down the street, heels clicking on the pavement. She imagined the awkward phone call, the pleading eyes, the attempts at forced connection. No way.

She took a longer route than normal, the deliberate action a physical representation of how she felt.
