He arrived late, five minutes after his appointment time. The waiting room was empty. He stood in the doorway, arms crossed. He had no intention of actually participating.

"Come in, Ben," said the therapist, a polite smile on his face.

He didn't move. He stood there, blocking the doorway, a silent challenge. He was here, yes, but he wasn’t going to make it easy.

"Are you going to come in, or are you just going to stand there all day?" The man's voice was even, but a hint of impatience showed in the words. He didn't respond. He’d make him work for it.

He finally walked into the room, his footsteps heavy. He found a chair and sat. He would not engage, not on his terms.
