The essay, his essay, was there, staring back at him from the university’s web page. Alex, who had written about his struggles with a learning disorder, could feel a flush creeping up his neck. They had exposed him to the world.

He stood up, shoving the chair back with a scrape on the wooden floor. He walked to the window, the city lights blurring in his vision. He didn’t want to be a poster boy for the institution. He just wanted to be...normal.

He turned back toward his desk, a new resolve hardening his features. He wouldn't let them win. He wouldn't be reduced to a soundbite.
