The email notification shimmered on Maya’s screen. She almost didn't open it. She was supposed to be studying, but the allure of a moment's distraction was too strong. She clicked. Her heart gave a little skip.

The subject line, "Scholarship Application Update," felt ominous. She held her breath. After a moment, she was letting out a massive sigh. It was… amazing.
