Maria stared at the email, her fingers trembling slightly. She’d spent weeks agonizing over the application. She read it again. And again. Then she looked up at the ceiling.

She began to hum, a small, tentative tune at first, then gaining confidence and volume. A silly, wide grin spread across her face. She clapped her hands together.

She pulled out her laptop, already composing a message to her parents, a weight that had been a part of her life for so long was suddenly gone. She felt buoyant, almost weightless, ready to fly.
