The cold, sterile examination room had seemed to shrink, as if all the bad news had been contained within its four walls. Now? It was a vast, open space, brimming with opportunity. She had the wrong records, they told her, and the ones that mattered were not hers.

Her hand flew to her mouth as a giggle escaped. She couldn't stop smiling; the corners of her lips felt stretched. She had to sit down to gather herself, but her legs felt like they had springs.

She took a deep, shuddering breath, a breath of pure, unfettered freedom. “Well,” she whispered, her voice husky with suppressed mirth, "that's... fantastic."
