The email notification pinged, and Beatrice nearly dropped her phone. The subject line: “Farewell from The Gilded Spoon.” She’d loathed that place. The overly-sweet sauces, the pretentious waitstaff, the excruciatingly slow service…she’d endured it all for years, simply to appease her boss. Now, a goofy grin stretched across her face, pulling at her cheeks.

She spun in her office chair, the world suddenly brighter. "Yes!" she whispered, the sound escaping with a lightness she hadn't felt in ages. She clicked on the message, the words blurring as her gaze skipped over the details.
