Margaret skipped, literally skipped, as she turned the corner into her kitchen. Sunlight, streaming through the window, illuminated a thin layer of dust motes dancing in the air. She’d found the letter tucked away in a box of old keepsakes, a letter she’d written to her own mother decades ago but never mailed. The words, still crisp on the yellowed paper, felt like a secret whispered just for her.

A silly grin stretched across her face, pulling at the corners of her mouth. She clutched the letter close to her chest. “Oh, Mum,” she murmured, the words catching in her throat with a happy, airy lightness. She began humming a tuneless melody, swaying slightly as she made herself a cup of tea.

The warmth of the mug in her hands seemed to mirror the glow spreading through her chest. The whole world felt a little brighter, a little more… magical. She decided to bake a cake, just because.
