Sarah squealed as she burst into the kitchen, clutching a slightly lopsided gingerbread house. The air was thick with the scent of cinnamon and icing sugar, a fragrant fog of childhood excitement. Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes gleaming with an infectious enthusiasm that bubbled over in giggles. I'd taught her the basics, sharing my grandmother's recipe, a secret I'd guarded for years.
