He turned it over, examining the intricate details. The lid lifted easily. Inside, nestled on a bed of tissue paper, was a small, perfectly carved wooden owl. It was stunning.

The note was brief, signed simply "Maya." He remembered her, the shy girl with the hidden talent for woodworking. The skill, he now knew, had not been lost. A feeling of contentment spread through him. He set the box on his desk, his gaze lingering on the owl’s wise, wooden eyes. He smiled, a genuine expression of admiration and pleasure.
