He had left it on the bedside table, a thick stack of pages with a cover featuring a cartoon version of herself. Amelia felt a surge of warmth spread through her. Her breath hitched. Inside, her entire life with Ben was laid out, from their first awkward date to the silly arguments they had over who did the dishes.

She flipped through it, her fingers tracing the words. A small smile played on her lips, then grew into a wide, unrestrained grin. The book painted her as the heroine, the heart of their shared universe. She reread a passage where Ben had described how she looked at him with such intense adoration. Her own heart fluttered.

She couldn’t wait to tease him, to hear him try and explain why he had to fictionalize their life. She found him in the garden, pruning roses. “Ben!” she called, her voice bright. “You sneak!”
