Gemotions

The confession hung in the air, heavy and thick, like the humid summer evening outside. “I’m converting to Judaism,” announced Sarah. Her mother, Eleanor, clutched her own hands together. Eleanor knew she always needed Sarah, to plan the holidays, to navigate the new technology. Everything would need to be changed now. The thought of the altered traditions made her dizzy. It was as if her anchor had been lifted, leaving her adrift on a turbulent sea. She felt tears prick at her eyes. She wanted desperately to reach out, to hold onto something solid. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words wouldn't come.
