The aroma of freshly baked cookies did nothing to soothe Thomas's rising panic. His niece, Daisy, was proudly presenting a drawing of a lanky, purple character with an unusually large head. "It's Gloom," she announced. The name, the drawing, it all hit Thomas with a cold shock.

He wanted to scream. He was so helpless. He wanted his mother to intervene, solve the problem. He felt he'd been sent to battle without armor. He could do nothing on his own.

He stared at the drawing, a sudden chill running through his bones. Daisy’s happiness was dependent on him, but he could not provide it.
