The email arrived like a punch to the gut. Maya stared at the screen, the rejection letter’s words blurring. She’d meticulously crafted the application, believing it was her only ticket to escape. Now, the glossy brochure of the university taunted her, a future she could no longer afford. Her phone slipped from her numb fingers, clattering onto the worn linoleum floor of her childhood bedroom.

The weight in her chest intensified, making it hard to breathe. Tears welled, blurring her vision. She felt a growing, icy dread. How would she tell her parents? They'd sacrificed so much. The thought of them being disappointed, of letting them down, was unbearable.

Later, she found herself huddled on the porch swing, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows. Each creak of the swing felt like a mocking echo of the opportunities she'd lost. Her stomach twisted, a physical manifestation of her fear.
