The neighborhood watch group sent out an email, with a sign-up sheet to protest the fence, which would be installed on the edge of the park. The email asked for volunteers to help make posters. He deleted the email immediately. He did not read past the first sentence.

He closed the blinds, plunging his living room into semi-darkness. The thought of confrontation, of expressing an opinion, was unbearable. He was happy to have the neighborhood be in disarray, he would stay in his home.

His phone buzzed with a notification from a friend, asking if he was going. He ignored it. He locked the front door, the sound echoing in the silent house. He wanted to disappear. He wanted the world to cease to exist.
