"Okay, so you just log in here…" Maria instructed, her voice flat. She pointed to the company website, feeling a dull ache behind her eyes. Across from her, Brenda, the new intern, sat with a notepad and pen, her expression eager, absorbent. Each click, each question from Brenda, felt like a tiny chisel, chipping away at Maria's sense of purpose.

She found herself hovering, correcting even the smallest errors, feeling a growing dread with each step that Brenda took. Her entire life was here. She knew everything, had been here for years. She thought she was irreplaceable.

A lump formed in her throat. She looked away, staring out the window, at the distant city skyline, which felt unfamiliar. This was wrong. It just felt wrong.
