The wedding was idyllic, sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows, a string quartet serenading the guests. Liam, however, felt a cold dread creeping into his bones. There, by the buffet table, stood Chloe. His stomach lurched.

He excused himself from his conversation, an urgent need to escape bubbling within him. He felt the phantom weight of her presence, the unseen leash that, for so long, had dictated his every move.

He imagined the ensuing conversation, the gentle probing for affection he once craved. He wanted to run, to hide in the anonymity of the crowd, but his feet felt rooted to the polished floor.
