Gemotions

“I thought we were building something… together,” he stammered, his voice barely a whisper. He stood in the doorway, watching her, a mix of hurt and bewilderment swirling within him. The phone lay on the table, still warm, the screen dark. He had heard her speaking, but could only make out fragments of the conversation.

He had arranged his whole life around her whims, sacrificing his ambitions for the sake of their relationship. The calls now threatened the foundation of their life. He couldn't imagine starting over, re-establishing himself. The thought of change made him profoundly uneasy.

He felt a sudden, crushing loneliness. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. He didn't know what to do, how to react. He just wanted things to go back to the way they were. The way he had built them to be.
