The telephone conversation was a blur of apologies and reassurances. The medical records, the life-altering diagnosis…it had all been a mistake. David felt a dizzying mix of emotions: a lightness, a disbelief, and then a creeping fear. He had been told what was wrong with him, and what to do, what to take. Now, he needed someone to tell him what the truth was.

He paced the room, his hands clasped behind his back, a familiar gesture of seeking structure. He'd relied on the medical professionals, the medications, the constant attention. Now, the anchor had been pulled up, and he was adrift. He felt cold.

He reached for the phone. He was at a loss. He just wanted someone to take care of him, to tell him what to do.
