He’d poured himself a large scotch, the amber liquid sloshing precariously as he paced. His phone was clutched so tightly, he felt the indentations of the buttons against his palm. The party, his birthday party, was cancelled. He’d envisioned the laughter, the shared jokes, the feeling of being… cared for. Now, the thought of facing the empty evening, the loneliness, brought a tightening to his throat. He needed someone, anyone, to tell him what to do, to offer comfort, but his contacts seemed to stretch into a lonely void.
