A sudden downpour outside matched the storm brewing inside her. He was speaking in Urdu, fluently. His family was visiting. She used to lean on him for explanations, to translate the nuances. Not anymore, it seemed.

The air felt thick, heavy, difficult to breathe. He seemed to have entered a world she could no longer access. She felt herself shrinking, becoming smaller and less significant.

She forced a smile, but it felt brittle, fragile. She gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles white. She was utterly alone, even in the midst of his family.
