He’d always relied on others. When Mark saw the familiar teal cover of his journal open on his desk, he nearly choked on his own spit. Liam, his roommate, was scrolling through his phone, completely oblivious. The knot in Mark’s stomach tightened.

Mark cleared his throat, trying to sound casual. "Hey, Liam." Liam looked up, his face a blank canvas.

Mark forced a smile.

"Anything interesting?" Mark asked, his voice wavering, feeling foolish. His palms were sweating.

Liam shrugged, then began to speak. Mark found himself already bracing for judgment, even before Liam uttered a word. He knew he'd do anything to keep the peace.
