The low hum of the refrigerator filled the kitchen as Arthur watched Buster through the window. He’d barely finished his breakfast and his mind was already whirling. He felt a familiar knot forming in his stomach, anticipating the inevitable.

He considered pretending he didn't see the escapee. But, that wouldn't make the situation go away. He’d never wanted to bother the neighbors, who always seemed so put together. Their house was bright, their lives full. His was a shadow.

He gripped the counter, the smooth surface cold under his sweaty palms.
